Adventures in Bookmarking Pt. 2

About a year and a half ago I wrote about my system for saving bookmarks in Obsidian and how happy I was with that system. Well, I figured it was about time to write a follow-up to that post as I’ve changed things around a little since then. More than once.

After spending some time with the Obsidian approach to bookmarking I eventually realized, as the number of pages I had bookmarked started piling up, that the system wasn’t as good as I initially thought. I found it cluttered my vault a little too much, and created too much noise inside a system where I’m very specifically trying to keep the signal no noise ratio trending in the right direction. So I started looking for alternatives.

What I ended up discovering was Linkding. Which is a fantastic self-hosted solution that is available through PikaPods. So I got that set up and moved all my links over there and things were great. For a little while. Until I once again started feeling a little unhappy about my solution. This was a while ago so I don’t remember exactly what it was that made me once again decide to shake things up, but once again I started looking for another alternative to my bookmarking-conundrum.

Enter Linkwarden! Another self-hosted app that is also on PikaPods! This was definitely the one. Linkwarden has tons of features for organizing your links. It can even store the contents in multiple formats so that if a page you’ve bookmarked vanishes from the Internet you can still read the contents. Amazing. I finally found the perfect solution!

You can probably see where this is going. That one also didn’t last very long.

Yesterday I shut down my Linkwarden pod, after spinning up Linkding once again and moving everything I still wanted to keep over to it. Turns out that all of Linkwardens awesome features were definitely not something I needed or every really used. The simplicity of Linkding is perfect for my needs. And it has a great iOS app that makes saving links on my phone a breeze.

… All though, as I’m writing this I think I figured out the solution to have this actually work in Obsidian. I might have to look into that. Hmm.
