One thing that has been bothering me for the longest time, that I haven’t taken the time to sit down and find a proper solution to, is how I deal with saving links to useful and interesting things I come across on the web.
I have tried a wide variety of different apps and services (GoodLinks is probably my favorite, but that’s Apple only, which makes it pretty much useless for me in the long run), but all of them have something about them that causes me not to enjoy using them. This has resulted in things ending up stored all over the place in various different buckets, making it a chore to go find the one thing I saw that one time, somewhere. Or with things just not being saved anywhere at all, which is even worse.
So, as someone who is a bit of a data hoarder, I had to create a solution that would work for me in the long term. Some way to store everything in one place so I could easily search for whatever I’m looking for. And since I’ve been sick and stuck at home for the last week or so, this has been the perfect time to deal with this particular problem of mine.
And the obvious solution, which had somehow never really occurred to me before now, has been to just dump everything into Obsidian. It’s one of the few apps I use almost every day, and so it just makes sense to store everything in there. A few simple templates together with the Quick Add addon make the whole process super fast and simple. Sprinkle some simple meta-data on top, like tags and maybe a few notes, and finding things in your Obsidian vault becomes a breeze. There are still some improvements I could make to my current system (aren’t there always?), but for now, this seems to work quite well for me.
At the same time, I’ve been inspired by a few other people on the web and figured I might as well share the links I’m collecting here on my website. So I’ve set up a /links page that I’m going to try to update regularly, starting with adding some of the links I’ve already collected.
