The Problem With Mastodon

Ruben writing on his blog Rubenerd:

You know the line that you shouldn’t ascribe to malice what can be explained by incompetence? To use the Australian colloquialism: yeah, nah, Mastodonians think it must always be malicious.

And from Roni on Mastodon:

I see this almost every day: whenever you talk about an app, product, idea, or anything really, someone online jumps in with, “I’m amazed you support this because those people are awful,” or worse, “you liked something that someone thinks is evil, so you must support this evil thing.” Basically, “why aren’t you perfect?”

I love Mastodon. It’s basically the only social media I check on a regular basis at this point. But there is this particular attitude that is quite prevalent on the platform and it is so incredibly off-putting and toxic. I’ve been meaning to write about this myself for the longest time, but then Ruben and Roni both said it better than I ever could.

To quote Ruben again from the end of his post: “Mastodon is a far better community than I’ve ever been involved in, but this specific attitude is exhausting. I dare us to do better.”
