A few days ago I finally got around to watching the recent four-part Dwarf Fortress documentary from Noclip, and it reminded me how much I absolutely adore that game and how much I miss playing it.
I first discovered Dwarf Fortress back in 2010 with the release of version 0.31.01 and pretty much instantly fell in love with the game. I’ve played for hundreds of hours over the years, and though it’s been quite a while since the last time I fired it up, I’d definitely still rank Dwarf Fortress as one of the best games ever made. It’s truly a singular experience.
Even if you’ve never played the game or even have any interest in it I’d still recommend watching the documentary. The story of Tarn and Zach Adams who have spent over 20 years developing this monstrosity of a game is fascinating enough on its own that it’s worth the watch.
I really should install DF again. I’ve barely even touched the Steam version which came out over 2 years ago!
