Scratching an Itch (or Why I Didn’t Buy Myself an Apple Watch Yesterday)

For the past few months, I’ve been considering the idea of maybe buying myself an Apple Watch. I really like some of the health-tracking technology the Apple Watch has, and that has been one of my main reasons for wanting to get one. But after going back and forth with myself for a long time, trying to convince myself that I should get one (which obviously isn’t a good sign) I never ended up clicking that “Buy” button.

…Which is fantastic! Because recently, thanks to the power of the all-seeing Instagram ads algorithm, I’ve become reminded just how much I love the look and feel of a good old-fashioned dumb watch. And the fact is that no matter how nice the Apple Watch might be, and how many awesome features it might have, I don’t want to give up wearing the watches in my (small, but still highly treasured) watch collection.

This realization brought along with it the thought that while I do not want to get an Apple Watch, I really, really do want to get a new watch, and I haven’t actually bought myself anything nice in quite a while. In 2021 I got myself a lovely, red G-SHOCK GA-2100-4A, and I’ts been the watch I’ve been wearing pretty much daily ever since I got it. I love that watch, it’s basically indestructible. The bright red color also brings me a surprising amount of compliments from strangers. And while I am most definitely your average typical Norwegian who finds getting complimented by people I don’t know (hell, even people I do know) very uncomfortable, I still appreciate it.

Anyway. The point is that yesterday I went out and got myself this beauty:

A Seiko SSKO23

It’s not the most expensive watch in the world but for me, it was quite an expensive purchase. I’ve always wanted a Seiko. Now I have one. I can be content for a little while longer. The itch has been scratched.

… I wouldn’t mind getting another G-SHOCK though. That new white and black one looks sweet!
