Exploring Daily Notes in Obsidian to Aid My Terrible Memory

One thing I am absolutely terrible at is remembering things. Events, things I need to get done, things I need to pick up at the shop—if it’s not written down somewhere, chances are good I’m going to forget. My head tends to be off somewhere else, dreaming about one thing or another.

My missus, on the other hand, has an amazing ability to remember things almost down to the minute when they happened. That restaurant we visited in April last year: I probably have a vague memory of having been there at some point in time, but she can recall the exact date we were there.

Now, all of this probably says a whole lot about me, but I’m not ready to get into that at this point in time. The point is that I’m terrible at remembering stuff and I’m always looking for ways and tools to help me do so. For tasks and places I need to be the obvious solution is a task manager and a calendar. No problem. Those I’ve got and I use them religiously. So the issue to solve is that of remembering the events of a day and other similar things.

That’s where the daily note in Obsidian comes in. I’ve played around with using daily notes before in a few different ways, but the practice never stuck with me. But after reading Lou Plummers’ fantastic blog post about how he uses daily notes and after creating some simple Shortcuts to add events to the daily note thanks to Actions for Obsidian, I’m going to give it another go.

The plan, at least for now, is to use the daily note to make a simple log of the things I’ve done during the day. Places I’ve been, people I’ve hung out with, etc. Keeping it simple for now, and maybe I’ll expand my use in the future.

Am I actually going to get some use out of this in the future? Who knows, but I’m going to give it another try either way.
